Delphine Jayot : Emma Bovary est-elle bête ?

« Emma Bovary est seule intelligente au milieu de cette réunion de crétins », c’est ainsi que George Sand va à l’encontre de l’avis communément partagé par ses confrères en 1857 qui ont vu en l’héroïne de Flaubert un personnage incarnant la bêtise. On aurait cependant tort de penser que ce jugement prévalant dans l’immédiate réception de l’oeuvre flaubertienne, et jusque dans le premier vingtième siècle, soit complètement révolu. Bête, sotte, idiote, il n’est pas rare qu’Emma Bovary soit encore aujourd’hui affublée de tels qualificatifs. Qu’en est-il réellement ? Si Flaubert la condamne par certains aspects, il est évident qu’il la sauve par d’autres, et sa bêtise – si c’en est une – mérite bien d’être repensée.

Delphine Jayot is an Associate Professor at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. She teaches 19th-century literature in the Department of French Language and Literature. She is also a member of the Flaubert team at ITEM (Institut des textes et manuscrits modernes) and an editor for the Gustave Flaubert website at the University of Rouen. Her work and publications primarily focus on Flaubert, bovarysm, and the relationships between literature and psychoanalysis.
